And so begins my blog for ENG 310. I’m just going to come right out and say it – I really hate blogging with a purpose, and I hate the word blog even more, so I’m just going to call it a journal. There’s a reason why I rarely update my LiveJournal more than once a month, and that I use a default mode instead of making it all special and pretty. I am not good with computers in the slightest, and I’ve already been having trouble adding links in my blogroll, which does not bode well for the fate of this particular journal. But I will try my best to be attentive to my journal over the course of the semester, and maybe I’ll even learn how to use the thing along the way.
I’ve chosen to write about the No Child Left Behind legislation in this journal so I can learn more about it and help inform my fellow classmates and future teachers about what the bill means for us. My mom is a middle school counselor in my school district in metro Detroit and I am always hearing from her how NCLB is an awful piece of legislation, so I want to learn for myself the repercussions of the bill in our schools today.
So far I have subscribed to the New York Times and the LA Times Education sections to see if there are differing opinions on the different coasts, and BBC News Education to see how people around the world view our education legislation. I also found some news feeds on Google News about NCLB, and several blogs dedicated to the subject, which gives me a good head-start in learning more about the bill. I will most likely search out more news sources as I get into this journal, but I’ll leave that for some other time when it’s not 2.15am and when I’m not frustrated at technology.
